The Berryman Institute (West) is currently accepting applications for its Graduate Student Fellowship Program. The following announcements displayed represent the latest awards advertised. Thank you so much for your interest in the Jack H. Berryman Institute.

Graduate Student Fellowship Competition

Deadline for proposals is January 31, 2010.

One of the missions of the Berryman Institute (BI) is to train graduate students who are interested in seeking careers in wildlife damage management. To achieve this goal, the BI anticipates offering a limited number of fellowships each worth $15,000/year to graduate students at universities in the western US or Great Plains. Students may not apply directly for funding but must be nominated by their faculty advisor. Faculty advisors can only nominate one graduate student.

All proposals will be reviewed and ranked by an outside panel. The BI directors, however, reserve the right to reject any proposal that is outside of the mission of the BI or the USDA-APHIS-WS-NWRC national needs assessment (see research priorities), is not science-based, engages in advocacy, or does not comply with the required format. All BI grants are awarded on a federal fiscal year and must therefore be spent before September 30, 2010. There can be no extensions and no exceptions.

The BI and the USDA Wildlife Services must be acknowledged on any products or publications that result from the funding. Students receiving BI fellowships are expected to present the results of their research at the BI’s biennial conference (travel funds will be provided separately).

Multi-year Fellowships

All BI graduate fellowships are normally for a one-year period. However, students, who will not graduate within a year can request an additional year of funding (through September 30, 2011). Such funding will be contingent upon the graduate student making satisfactory progress in the prior year and upon the BI receiving adequate funding from the USDA to continue the grants program.
